with videoHer grandmother may be known far beyond the country’s borders, but 17-year-old Lihi had no idea of her grandmother’s fame until two years ago. Thursday night she let in DNA Singers see that she has inherited the musicality. She blew away the guessing panel with her dreamy and clean voice.
In the popular RTL 4 show, which attracted almost 800,000 viewers on Thursday, people who are related to a Dutch artist perform. The panel, this episode consisting of the teams of Jaap Reesema and The Kik singer Dave von Raven and that of Jeroen van Koningsbrugge and Geraldine Kemper, has to guess with whom they have a blood relationship.
On Lihi’s emergence, the panelists say her appearance doesn’t give anything away in any case. Then it turns out that she lives in Israel and understands some Dutch, but does not speak it. That doesn’t make the search any easier for the connoisseurs. But in the hint video, in which she is picked up from Schiphol by RTL, there is a golden clue: Lihi is the granddaughter of someone who recently performed on stage in front of a huge audience. “She returned to the stage that made her famous.” Kemper gets it right away: that must be the Eurovision Song Contest.
On Lenny’s course
Then Lihi, who says she has no hint of stage fright, sings the song All I want from Kodaline. Grandma stands in the wings with her hands up with pride, reveals her shadow. Lihi’s performance, in front of an audience for the first time, blows the panel away. “What a pure voice”, it sounds. “So beautiful and dreamy, I love it. Great job.”
But who is her famous grandmother now? Dave von Raven says he knows for sure. “This is the first game in the world that I’m good at,” he says. Israel, the Eurovision Song Contest: he immediately thinks of Lenny Kuhr. The other panel members are also on that course: it must be the singer who in 1969 with The troubadour won the largest music competition in the world. Even though Von Raven changes to Bonnie St. Claire at the last minute, without presenting any clear arguments for this.
Indeed, behind the scenes comes Kuhr, who is “incredibly proud” of her granddaughter’s achievement. ,,Someone who has never sung in front of an audience and now … really unbelievable”, she says, repeating in English that she is so proud of Lihi. Kuhr explains that her daughters live in Israel and that Lihi is her oldest grandchild. “Besides knowing that he is such an incredibly nice child, it is also nice for a singer to see that your grandchild is as musical as you. We have sung a lot together and now for the first time in front of an audience.”
Lihi says that for a long time she had no idea that her grandmother is so famous and winner of the Eurovision Song Contest. ,,No, I did not know that. I don’t live in the Netherlands and I didn’t notice that.” When presenter Art Rooijakkers asks since when Lihi knows about her grandmother’s artist existence, she says: ,,Since the past two years. Then I really realized it.” She enjoys her grandmother’s music. “I love her music. Her voice is amazing.”
