Joni Mitchell fulfilled a big dream for herself and us and sang for the first time in her long career at the Grammys in Los Angeles on Sunday (February 4th).
What song did Joni Mitchell sing at the Grammys?
Accompanied by Brandi Carlile, Lucius, Allison Russell and several others, the 80-year-old celebrated her mega hit “Both Sides Now”.
What award did Joni Mitchell win at the 2024 Grammys?
Of course, Mitchell is no stranger to the coveted music award. In the past she won a total of nine Golden Gramophones, and this evening she won the tenth for the best folk album (“Joni Mitchell at Newport”). However, the singer never took to the stage to perform any of her songs.
“She redefined a song’s ability to reflect a person’s soul,” Carlile said before the performance, calling Mitchell “the matriarch of the imagination.”
Seeing the legendary folk musician so agile and cheerful on stage and presenting her art after her brain aneurysm in 2015 visibly touched the audience in Los Angeles. Some had tears in their eyes.
Memes had previously made the rounds that hardly any of the nominees’ names would mean anything to an older rock audience and that almost everyone was just waiting for Mitchell to appear. The big winners at this year’s awards included Phoebe Bridgers (or Boygenius), SZA and Taylor Swift, who once again made Grammys history.
Prior to this year’s show, Mitchell, who performed in an elegant armchair, last won a Grammy two years ago when she won Best Historical Album for the first installment of her fabulous archive series, “Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol. 1.” : The Early Years (1963-1967)”.
