He sings, composes and, as a piano-jazzer, is also the musical director of Steve Colbert’s “Late Show”: Jon Batiste. He received this year’s Grammy for Best Album and four other awards, including Best Video, for his lyrically engaged fusion-soul album We Are. After eleven nominations, Batiste with his five trophies is the hit in 2022.

In an interview, Batiste once said about “We Are” that the production of this record was like a celebration for him. A salute also to the tradition and older musicians of his hometown of New Orleans. “The stories they shared with me while working are priceless.”

The 19-year-old pop singer and ex-Disney Channel actress Olivia Rodrigo followed with three Grammys, who was also honored as “Best New Artist”. The Foo Fighters also received three awards, including Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song. The awards were received in memory of the late drummer Taylor Hawkins. The band’s planned cameo appearance was cancelled.

The project duo Silk Sonic with Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak finally scored twice; with the song “Leave the Door Open” in the categories “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year”.

President Zelenskyj sent an emotional message to the US music community gathered in Las Vegas via video message from Kyiv: “What could be more opposite to music than war?” Zelenskyj said in a live broadcast on Sunday evening. “Fill the silence with your music. Please support us in any way you can.” His dream, he said, is for people in Ukraine’s highly competitive cities to be able to live freely again. “As free as you are on the Grammys stage”. At the musical end of the message, soul singer John Legend sang a tribute song to the oppressed country together with Ukrainian musicians.

The 64th gala of the world’s most important music award was postponed from January 31 to April due to the Covid pandemic, from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. The nearly four-hour gala, in which only some of the 84 categories are celebrated, was moderated by comedian Trevor Noah. The jury consists of around 13,000 members of the American Recording Academy.
