Grain-rich winter food fields in Drenthe are magnificent for songbirds such as the yellowhammer. More than 14,000 birds were counted last winter

The winter fields are special pieces of land sown with all kinds of grain, cornflowers and sunflowers. Farmers do not harvest the land, so the seeds of the flowers serve as food for wintering birds. This is necessary, because normally there is little food to be found on a farm in the winter. This is because farmers plow the top layer of their soil into the earth. The nutrient-rich top layer then disappears into the soil.
