Governor: Mass grave found in Russian recaptured Lyman

A mass grave has been found in the recently recaptured town of Lyman in eastern Ukraine from the Russians, according to local authorities. According to Governor Pavlo Kirilenko, it is unclear how many bodies are in the grave. The Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reports on the basis of a police official that 180 people were killed.

The Russian army reported last weekend that it had given up the strategically important site of Lyman. The liberation of the city in the Donetsk region has been hailed as a major victory by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky. Elsewhere in eastern Ukraine, too, the government says it has made territorial gains over the Russians.

Last month, Ukraine reported finding a mass grave in the city of Izyum. Hundreds of bodies were found this spring in Butsha, a suburb of Kiev, after the Russians withdrew. The find sparked international outrage.
