In the energy crisis, many sports clubs are also affected by high prices. The DOSB now welcomed the proposals for a gas price brake.

During the energy crisis, the Federal Government’s commission of experts presented concrete proposals for a gas price brake on Monday (October 10, 2022). In December, the down payments are to be taken over by the state and from March 2023 a basic requirement of around 80 percent will be available at a fixed price of 12 cents per kilowatt hour. This was also welcomed by the umbrella organization of German Olympic sports, DOSB.

Slalom in Garmisch, Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf, bobsled races in Winterberg. It takes a lot of energy to do that. It’s extremely expensive now. How hard will the cuts be for winter sports?

DOSB sees relief for clubs

Because many sports clubs are also affected by rising energy costs. “We assume that the assumption of the down payment proposed in the first step will provide some relief for sports clubs in Germany,” said DOSB CEO Torsten Burmester.

He also emphasized the importance of the second step: “The proposed second step with the gas price cap from twelve cents to 80 percent of the discount for September 2022 from spring 2023 is also important.” Nevertheless, the DOSB warns of increased costs and warns that clubs “will be challenged to save energy and finance energy costs.”

DOSB demands: “Hardship fund also for sport”

Many clubs have already used up their reserves in the corona pandemic and cannot absorb large, sometimes doubled, cost increases. To compensate for hardship cases, there should be additional aid funds from the state. These should also enable liquidity aids. Burmester emphasized: “It will be extremely important that sports clubs are also eligible to apply for the planned hardship fund.”

The sports clubs in Germany are already feeling the effects of the energy crisis and are demanding support from the state.
