The Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland will reopen on Wednesday 23 August for rail freight transport. But passenger trains will continue to be diverted for the time being because the damage caused by the derailment of a freight train last week appears to be greater than expected. The Swiss railways SBB expects that it will probably take until sometime next year for all repairs to be completed.
