Gothic trips, desire for mysterious holidays for Italians

Whether it’s a ruined castle somewhere along the Scottish coast, or Dracula’s lost in Transylvania. Or the catacombs in Paris or the English and Irish moors, little changes. The desire for a gothic journey, among misty atmospheres, rain and storms, and maybe even some ghosts is very high. This is revealed in research conducted by Klarna, a global digital bank and leader in flexible payments, which, given the imminent Halloween, analyzed Italians’ desire to pack their bags.

The result? If he could leave, 1 in 2 would choose a Gothic destination. That is to say, 48.1% of those interviewed would take a trip inspired by a horror novel or film or something with a gothic atmosphere. Counterproof? Only 15% this year are not fascinated by the Dracula atmosphere.

The most popular destinations

From the dark Scotland, to the castles of Bohemia passing through the many inhabited Italian villages that are the backdrop to myths and legends, the most popular destinations for this period have a very clear common denominator. Not by chance castles and manors appear on the wishlist of Italian travellers, chosen by 29.1%, followed by mythological sites or sites with curses behind them, which can be visited by 18.6% of Italians, and finally dark and gloomy forests and mountains, the ideal destination for 11.4% of those interviewed.

A surprising result? Not exactly. And not just because of the particular time of year, but also because This type of tourism is very popular on social media: from the magical Prague, land of alchemists and ghosts, to the many castles of Bohemia, to Harry Potter’s Edinburgh and night tours organized in Greyfriars Kirkyard cemetery to the village of Whitby, which inspired Bram Sticker for his Dracula and where between 30 October and 2 November it will host the Whitby Goth Weekenda goth music festival.
