Gosens is already aiming for the Champions League, but Inter will be without Barella

The German is working to recover from the muscle injury: he will return to the top for the return of Anfield, where he scored last year. But there is the Nicolò tile: 2 rounds of disqualification

Two sides of the same coin. A smiling one, like Robin Gosens, who has landed in Appiano Gentile for forty-eight hours and is already crazy about the Inter world. The other, on the other hand, is sad and disconsolate, as it had already been that “cursed” evening of 7 December, after the naive expulsion for a reaction foul against Real Madrid: Nicolò Barella had the same face as Madrid yesterday when he learned of Uefa’s decision to disqualify him for two days, which translated means no round of 16 against Liverpool.

A blow for the future Nerazzurri captain, who hoped – like all fans and not only – to get away with a stop. But no discount, because at the end of the regulation the reaction is worth two games of suspension, beyond the actual willful misconduct. That’s why the news was not so shocking for the coaching staff and clubs, already tuned in to the idea of having to give up Nicolò in the double challenge against Kloop’s Reds.

And Inter have no plans to appeal for disqualification. Inzaghi will have to do without the perhaps most “English” player of his squad, the one who by temperament, race and determination would certainly not have accused the pressure of the atmosphere of Anfield but would have only exalted himself in one of the times of world football, for this reason highly anticipated Champions League challenge.

Hero at Anfield

Only five Italian clubs in history have managed to beat Anfield and among these there is Inter: the first team to succeed in the feat was Genoa di Bagnoli in the 1991-92 Uefa Cup, then two victories in the Champions League came thanks to to Capello’s Roma in 2001 and Prandelli’s Fiorentina in 2009. An unexpected triumph was that of Guidolin’s Udinese in 2012 (Europa League), almost as resounding as the success of Gasperini’s Atalanta last season, with a legendary blitz . Among the great protagonists of that magical night of the last Italian triumph in Liverpool (0-2) there was also Gosens, author of the doubling.

The same Gosens who today aims precisely at Anfield’s challenge to be one hundred percent available to Inzaghi. The German already set off in Appiano Gentile on Thursday for a personalized workout in the gym. Gosens comes from a hamstring injury in his right thigh remedied at the end of September in the Champions League against Young Boys. Robin tried to recover quickly, but in early December he had to stop again due to a relapse, when he seemed close to being called. For this reason, Inter now does not want to speed up the times and is thinking of a recovery table to have him fully available for the trip to Liverpool on 8 March.

The stages

The next steps are more or less obvious: Gosens will first of all have to complete the healing process, a fundamental element in order to then be able to begin a real field work, with a new mini preparation that will be studied ad hoc together with the technical staff: better physical condition without risk, to be the protagonist in the final sprint of the championship race. Once he has regained form, Gosens will be able to start working with the rest of the team, ready to put his overwhelming physical power and his sense of goal at Inter’s disposal. For Inzaghi it will be easy to insert it in the tactical context, given that Robin has been working for years in a system with a three-man defense, as a full-fledged winger. The hope is to have him available by the end of February, but the goal remains set on the Champions League: even without Barella, Inter dreams of the feat at Anfield. With Gosens: he knows how.
