Transport Senator Manja Schreiner wants to have the Berlin S-Bahn rail network tested for the transport of goods.
According to a spokeswoman for the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment, a two-year pilot phase should now start in which logistics partners for the project are being sought. Only then is it conceivable that the first freight S-Bahn of this type can run. The “Tagesspiegel” had previously reported.
The senator was enthusiastic about the idea, it said. An initial analysis of the possibilities was positive: “The study now available shows that local public transport can in principle be suitable for transporting goods,” said the CDU politician to the Tagesspiegel.
Berlin is very burdened by freight traffic on the streets. Therefore, using the S-Bahn rail network could be an alternative. The idea for this came from Zurich: there is the so-called cargo tram and the e-tram, into which people can unload their bulky goods or their old electronic devices.
Further details about the idea were not yet clear on Saturday.
