Goo Goo Dolls album is American standard

A song must feel like a heavy burden when Billboard calls it number one in two decades, and then you never come close to that success again. Iris by Goo Goo Dolls was that monster hit of 1998.

Chaos In Bloom is the fourteenth album by the band from Buffalo New York that seems to have fallen into a stupor. Singer John Rzeznik announced that this album would show a more alternative sound. Well. Opener Yeah I Like You is just the blueprint of an American rock song with guitars made for the car radio and vocals that scream out loud in choruses. Most of the album is the same American standard fare, baked for decades according to a tried and tested recipe, without being seasoned by any quirkiness. Only the uplifting You Are The Answer still has a particular emotional power. Maybe not very bad, but easy going.
