Many people are trying to eat less meat. That’s what the Berlin Food Week will be about. A preview of what foodies can expect during the festival.

This year, the Berlin Food Week is also focusing on a question for the future: How will people feed themselves? And what are alternatives to meat consumption? The festival starts this Monday (October 10th). According to the organizer, several restaurants want to prepare dishes that rely on alternative protein sources.

The motto of this year’s city menu is “Gone from the bark”. Dozens of restaurants are participating, including some in other cities. Some want to serve a vegan alternative to steak. Other ideas include wild mushroom carpaccio or a watermelon tuna alternative.

The market for meat substitutes has recently increased. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 98,000 tons of food were produced in Germany in 2021 that replaced meat or meat products with plant-based alternatives – an increase of 17 percent.

Food Week combines various events, including cooking classes. The “House of Food” is scheduled to open on Friday and Saturday (October 14/15). Various manufacturers are to show their products at the market in the Bikini Berlin shopping center. Admission is free here.
