Regenerated from the season in Como, the goalkeeper restarts from the call-up with Senegal. And he waits to know his future
It’s been an intense five months, to get back to breathing as a starter and feel supported by the team and the club. All that in Rennes they had denied him overnight, excluding him from the plans. But continuing to pay him his salary, being in any case under contract until 2025. This is the strange case of Alfred Gomis, the Italian-Senegalese goalkeeper, who has reached the end of his loan with Como, but is ready to start over on new bases, the Breton club permitting. And preferably in Serie A.
Responsibility
—
After the experience with Spal in 2017, it would be a return for Mendy’s deputy in Senegal, called up for the next two matches of the African national team, including the prestigious one with Brazil, on 19 June. In the meantime Gomis, who also passed through Dijon before landing in Brittany, must weigh up the prospects, even if Rennes hasn’t been heard for now. An anomaly, considering the fact that the French club allowed him to return to play by transferring him to Como in January, but with a straight loan. Therefore, no redemption options: a contradiction with the contractual situation of the player who was notified last summer that he was no longer part of the plans. Gomis took note of it and made himself available, to identify the best solution, for everyone, to no avail: “I have assumed my responsibilities – the 29-year-old says – but I cannot take responsibility for those of the club”.
Ambitions
—
In short, there is a need to clarify, also because Gomis has shown that he is up to the level beyond the level of the cadet series, where “he had the courage to get back into the game contrary to many others who would have preferred to collect their salary and that’s enough”, underlines his agent Giacomo Branchini. “Como was a good experience – Gomis reiterates -, it regenerated me mentally, making me feel the trust of teammates and managers again. Now it is normal to look around to continue playing, making my skills and value available”. Also because Rennes never made itself heard again. Serie A remains a medium-term goal for Como, but also for Gomis who will carefully evaluate each proposal. Without excluding a new experience abroad: “Beyond Como’s ambitions, we are open to club projects that want to intelligently invest in the profile of a very reliable goalkeeper”, concludes Branchini. The ball passes to Rennes, who without Gomis did no better than last year, hooking up again to the Europa League.
