Golfing in Dirkshorn to raise money for Parkinson’s: “Deteriorating fast”

On a sunny Thursday afternoon, golf enthusiasts from all over the country participate in a benefit golf tournament in Dirkshorn. The tournament is held several times a year, on golf courses throughout the Netherlands, to raise money for Parkinson’s. A disease that still needs a lot of research, and therefore a lot of money is needed.

Today the tournament took place in Dirkshorn, which attracted 55 enthusiastic golfers. The tournament was started by the Parkinson2Beat foundation. A sports platform and foundation that Ruud Overes founded after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2017. “I think something more needs to be done to try to get rid of Parkinson’s.”

Hans van Velden took the initiative to organize the tournament today on his beloved golf course in Dirkshorn. Hans his wife has been suffering from Parkinson’s for some time, which is why he likes to contribute in this way to raise money for research.

Although Ruud can still practice his beloved sport of golf, he clearly notices the impact the disease has on his life. “It’s time to get used to the fact that you can’t do something again.”

Hans can confirm this when he talks about his wife’s disease process. “The last six months have deteriorated so quickly,” he says. “First you need a walker and the next step is a wheelchair, and that is psychologically taxing of course.”

Despite everything, both gentlemen visibly have a smile on their face today and all participants enjoy a game of golf with good weather. “It’s nice when people help in a very nice way: playing golf,” says Ruud. “And every little bit helps.”
