Germany’s golf idol Bernhard Langer is just one win away from the next record on the PGA Tour Champions.
The 65-year-old from Anhausen won the tournament in his US adopted home of Boca Raton in Florida on Sunday and celebrated his 44th title among the over-50s. The Masters winner of 1985 and 1993 is only one win away from the record set by US legend Hale Irwin, who won 45 tournaments on the US seniors tour.
Thanks to a strong final round of 66 with a total of 199 strokes, Langer clearly prevailed against Thongchai Jaidee from Thailand and the American Paul Goydos (both 205 strokes) at the Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club.
A day earlier, the former number one in the world had again managed a small feat: 65-year-old Langer finished the second round on the par 72 course with just 63 strokes and thus needed two strokes less than his age. This experience is only granted to very few golfers.
Langer has been the superstar on the US senior tour for 15 years. In the over-50s category, he has won the title 44 times and earned more than $33 million in prize money.
