Golf club, two workers died while pruning trees

Accident at work in Noverasco di Opera, a third worker is serious. Investigations underway into the reasons for the failure of the telescopic arm

They fell from about twenty meters and were crushed under the steel platform on which two workers were working who lost their lives on Wednesday in a very serious accident at work which took place in the Noverasco district of Opera, on the outskirts of Milan, while they pruned tall trees at a golf club. A third worker, who was injured, was transported to the hospital with head and chest trauma, fractured legs and an arm. Doctors said he was in extremely serious condition. Two other victims were then added to the Lombard tragedy during the day: a 24-year-old worker died in Teramo, falling from a height of about 10 meters in a construction site for the renovation of a church. And a 33-year-old lumberjack died in an accident in the municipality of Luzzi, in the Cosentino area, during the cutting of a tall tree.

The dynamics

The two Lombard victims are Angelo Giovanni Zanin, 51, owner of the Zanin Vivai company in Lungavilla (Pavia), in Oltrepò Pavese, of which Dario Beira, 69, was an employee. The injured twenty-five year old is originally from Casteggio (Pavia) and was learning aerial pruning techniques. The three men were working on a mobile platform, one supported by a telescopic arm, rented. For reasons yet to be ascertained, around 10 am the top part of the structure crashed to the ground, detaching itself, apparently cleanly, from the arm that raised it. The firefighters had to disengage the injured man from the remains of the platform. Investigations into the causes are allegedly focusing on an artisanal weld, which according to rumors is located right between the telescopic boom and the platform: an “anomalous” repair, perhaps undersized or not performed in a workmanlike manner, but pending the results, it would be however to attribute the collapse of the platform to an imperfect maintenance. The deputy prosecutor Tiziana Siciliano, head of the “environment, health, safety, work” pool of the Milan prosecutor’s office, which coordinates the investigations, went to the scene this afternoon. You will then be entrusted with consultancy to a mechanical engineer to clarify the reasons for the breakup and to decide on any entries in the register of suspects. The hypothesis is manslaughter.
