The seven-time NBA champion Golden State Warriors is committed to women’s basketball and will compete in the US professional league WNBA from 2025. The California franchise made the announcement on Thursday after the expansion was approved.
The team, like the men’s team, will play its games at the Chase Center in San Francisco and train in Oakland, where the Warriors were home until 2019. “Golden State” will be included in the name of the new team, but it is still unclear whether the women will also compete as “Warriors.”
“The Bay Area is the perfect market for a WNBA team and we are excited to finally have this opportunity,” said Warriors CEO Joe Lacob. “We have been interested in a WNBA franchise for several years and believe that now is the ideal time to implement this vision.”
Twelve teams currently play in the WNBA. The last team to join the team was Atlanta Dream in 2008. Three of the current franchises have moved at least once, two (Dallas Wings, Las Vegas Aces) even multiple times.
