The storm raged in front of the Berlinale Palace, in the hall the applause for the German-Turkish comedienne Meltem Kaptan (41). For her very first film appearance in Andreas Dresen’s “Rabiye Kurnaz against George W. Bush” she was honored with the Silver Bear for the best leading role.
The jury praised Kaptan’s wit and warmth. The honoree, moved to tears, thanked the director and her parents in Turkish: “You raised your daughters with a lot of love! I dedicate the award to all mothers who stand up for their children.”
The film is about Rabiye Kurnaz, who fights to free her son who was innocently imprisoned in Guantanamo. Laila Stieler (57) also received the Silver Bear for the screenplay.
The Golden Bear for Best Film was awarded to Carla Simón’s “Alcarràs”, about the struggle for survival of Catalan peach farmers. The director is overjoyed: “I consider myself a daughter of the Berlinale, because I feel at home here!”
