On Monday (02/14/2022), Papadakis and Cizeron conjured up an almost perfect freestyle on the ice in the Capital Indoor Stadium. After the four minutes, nobody had any doubts that the French could not have won gold. Four years after silver in Pyeongchang, the four-time world and five-time European champions have now also fulfilled their Olympic dream.
Even after the rhythm dance in the lead, the four-time world champions continued to increase their lead in the freestyle and received a total of 226.98 points – a new world record. The new Olympic champions reaped thunderous applause and great cheering for their program “Elegie” from the few spectators, as usual. The two are only the second French Olympic champions in ice dancing, after Marina Anissina/Gwendal Peizerat, who won gold in Salt Lake City in 2002.
World and European champions Viktoria Sinizina and Nikita Kazalapov (220.51) from the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) secured second place by a clear margin. Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue of the USA (218.02) won the bronze medal. The new Olympic champions decided not to take part in the European Championships in January because of the risk of infection.
