The ice skating legend has been a supporter of the Special Olympics movement for many years and gave a special kind of congratulations.
The two judoka Alessia Schmidt (23) and Henry Unterseher (20) from Bavaria each won gold at the Special Olympics World Games on Thursday.
And the medals were given to a true sports legend: Katarina Witt (57) – our two-time Olympic champion in figure skating and four-time world champion.
Witt is a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics movement and a member of the World Games Committee. “To be presented with medals as an athlete is always one of the best moments,” says Witt to the BZ. “I was all the happier to have performed this time myself and to hand over their medals to the great judoka.”
