In the south of the Netherlands the summer holidays are over and that means that all students have to go back to work and sometimes even at a completely new school. So also tense heads at the Carolus Borromeus College in Helmond. The 332 brand new first graders reported to their new school for the first time.
And that takes some getting used to: from the oldest in primary school to the youngest in secondary school. Not the familiar environment of primary school, but a large school where you can easily get lost. Not surprising that the new students walked in unfamiliar.
Pim is a seventh grader from today. He is looking forward to it, but finds it especially exciting. “It’s hard to explain exactly what I find exciting. I really find everything exciting.”
“Of course you don’t know anyone yet.”
Exciting. That word comes up more often when our reporter asks the first graders how they experience this first day. Phileine: “It’s a bit exciting, because of course you don’t know anyone yet.” And Demi thinks it’s ‘fun and exciting’.
Julian is ‘a little nervous’, but he is looking forward to the new adventure. “I like to work.”
Lieke, Demi and Maud form a group together. When asked whether they will arrive on time all year round, Lieke replies: “Yes! Otherwise you have to report at eight o’clock in the morning. So I am sure to be on time every time.”
The coming days will mainly be about getting to know each other and the school for the first graders. They don’t really have lessons yet.
