Going on a skiing holiday next weekend by car? Here (whether or not) heavy traffic is expected | News

The spring break starts at the end of this week. Touring does not expect major problems on the access roads to the ski areas during the exodus to the winter sports resorts on Friday evening and Saturday 26 February. In most of our neighboring countries, the crocus leave partly started earlier. Mobility organization VAB expects heavy traffic, because a quarter of the Flemish who regularly went on winter sports before Covid-19 will go skiing again this winter.

The spring break is traditionally the most popular winter sports holiday. Spring break is also available in the central and southern Netherlands, region B in France (north and southeast of the country), the Basel region in Switzerland and Hamburg and Bavaria in Germany.

In France Since November 1, winter tires and/or snow chains are mandatory during the winter season in the mountain regions. Touring does not expect too many problems for the exodus itself. On Friday it will be busy with smaller traffic jams (orange) in the Paris area and in the Rhône-Alpes region. Elsewhere traffic is smooth. On Saturdays, there is only traffic with congestion (code orange) in the Rhône-Alpes region.

In Germany it will be busy with a chance of traffic jams (orange) on Friday afternoon and evening and on Saturday in southern Germany towards Austria and Switzerland. In SwitzerlandAustria and North-Italy busy traffic is expected on Saturday with some traffic jams before departure (orange). The biggest traffic congestion is expected between 9am and 5pm.

In Germany, Luxembourg and Austria, winter tires are mandatory in winter weather conditions. “Make sure your car is equipped with this when you drive in these countries. Snow chains may also be mandatory on some mountain passes in the Alps and the Pyrenees, and due to the frequent snowfall in recent weeks, there is a chance that you will need them,” VAB said.

Return

For the return, Saturday 5 March is an orange day in the Alpine region of France. Elsewhere, Touring does not expect any problems for the return. In Germany, especially in Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland and northern Italy, heavy traffic is expected on Saturday 5 March and to a lesser extent on Sunday 6 March with smaller traffic jams (‘orange day’) heading north, especially between 9 am and 4 pm. .
