What does life in, on and around the water look like in the summer? To find out, we make in the series Splashing Drenthe a trip along the Drenthe water. Today we literally dive into the water, because we are going to discover the underwater life of swimming pool Engelgaarde near Meppel.
Eddy Schutten dives every week in Engelgaarde. He is a diving instructor and chairman of the Archimedes Meppel diving association. “Engelgaarde is a former sand extraction pond. The roots of the trees along the side of the pond grow very nicely in the water. It looks like a kind of mangrove, where there are many fish.”
The deepest point of the lake is at sixteen meters. “We are certainly not going there,” explains Schutten. “There it is cold, dark and nothing is alive. The most beautiful part is where the daylight can still come. That is about two to three three meters deep.”
