Wojciech szczęsny is a confessed smoker. Now he talks about his addiction again – and turns to all spectators.
Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny not only shines on the pitch at FC Barcelona, but also with unusual openness. Because of his years of smoking, the 35-year-old sees himself only in part as a good role model. “Don’t do that! I lost this fight,” said Szczęsny in the ESPN interview.
He regrettably said: “When I was very young, I started with this negative habit. So for everyone who watches: don’t do what I did!” The Pole came back from retirement for Barça to help out after the serious injury to Captain Marc-André Ter Stegen.
In his 25 competitive games he only lost once and kept the zero 13 times. At the fans he became a cult figure as “Szczęsny Fumador” (Szczęsny, the smoker). “My share in this is minimal,” he said of his run in the Barça dress. The team of coach Hansi Flick simply plays wonderful football, he just tries not to “not mess up”.
Why this honesty? “Because I’m not a politician. I’m just a goalkeeper. I have to catch the ball and shoot,” said Szczęsny, adding: It is much easier to give interviews if you are honest – even if there are topics such as smoking about which he is reluctant to talk about. After all, he doesn’t want to be a bad role model.
