Goalkeeper soap at PSV: this is what the connoisseurs and fans think

The discussion about who should keep goal at PSV is approaching boiling point. Last weekend Joël Drommel made an unfortunate impression. Reserve keeper Yvon Mvogo has not left a strong impression in the past either. The discussion is further fueled by the fact that PSV coach Roger Schmidt did not want to say anything about the position under the bar before the game against Leicester. Former international Joop Hiele and the well-known goalkeeper coach Wil Coort do not understand that. “That clarity is important.”

Joop Hiele was PSV goalkeeper coach from 1999 to 2008. He thinks PSV should put its energy into Drommel. “He has shown that he has qualities. Yes, he also had lesser actions. Then it is normal in the Netherlands to cut people down. But the club should sit down with him to discuss what it is.”

Wil Coort from Den Bosch is a goalkeeper trainer and has worked for Ajax, Porto, Saint Petersburg and Olympique Marseille, among others. His experience teaches him that you should not switch too much with keepers. “You shouldn’t put them in the same league with field players, as Schmidt did. You have to give goalkeepers confidence.”

Both goalkeeper coaches recognize a known problem in Drommel. Namely that the transition from the sub-top (FC Twente) to the top (PSV) is a big one. “The top sports climate is really different,” says Hiele. “Always the duty to win can do something to people.” Coort knows better than anyone that there is a lot at stake at PSV. “As a keeper you have less to do and the pressure is different. You only learn to deal with it by playing a lot.”

In Leicester, England, where PSV will play in the Conference League on Thursday evening, the choice of goalkeeper is also an important topic for the fans. “Drommel has been abandoned,” says PSV supporter Richard Beek. “There have been very few matches in which he has really been the only one to cost points. Boscagli is also dreaming against FC Twente. It’s not much defensively either. But I do agree that he is not a great goalkeeper.”

PSV supporter Dennis recognizes himself in that opinion. “As if Mvogo is so much better. Then leave Drommel alone, it can still generate money in the long run. They should have just gotten one from Ukraine or Russia. Then this shit would be over.”

Joop Hiele and Wil Coort do not immediately see an alternative in Mvogo. Not only because of the past, but also because he has little competition rhythm. Coort believes that PSV should give confidence to Drommel, who has cost 3.5 million euros and has signed for five years. “You still have to go through seasons with that.”
