After his winter move to FC Bayern, goalkeeper Yann Sommer was rarely able to impress. As soon as captain Manuel Neuer is fit again, the Swiss should move into second place, and an immediate farewell cannot be ruled out. Now a longtime companion of the veteran has given a prognosis.
“Yann is still in the mood to play, he’s still in top form and next summer there’s a European Championship just around the corner. I think Yann’s head and plans are to be in goal every weekend and not somewhere on the bench I don’t know whether that will be at Bayern Munich or anywhere else,” explained Patrick Foletti, goalkeeper coach for the Swiss national team, in an interview with the “Abendzeitung”.
After all, FC Bayern transferred nine million euros to Gladbach in January to release the experienced goalkeeper from his contract. The transfer became necessary due to the serious ski injury of regular keeper Manuel Neuer, who is still working on his comeback.
Sommer’s working paper with the record champions is still valid until 2025, but a quick farewell is conceivable. His performances in the generally chaotic back series were too mixed.
Foletti: “Yann is experienced and clever enough and will definitely make the right decision. I’m absolutely not worried about him.”
FC Bayern: Praise and blame for Yann Sommer
In Foletti’s opinion, newcomer Sommer has been judged too critically in recent months.
“In view of the fact that Bayern has had a turbulent time, I think that Yann has always been able to perform and has dealt with the enormous pressure very well,” emphasized the 49-year-old, but also admitted: “At the same time you have to say there’s been a scene or two he’s handled better in the past.”
