Goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi last played a Bundesliga game for RB Leipzig in October 2022 in a 4-0 win against VfL Bochum. Now, 491 days later, the 33-year-old Hungarian is making his comeback in the German upper house. Coach Marco Rose announced this at the press conference before the duel with 1. FC Union Berlin on Sunday (5:30 p.m.).
Gulácsi suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee in the Champions League game against Celtic Glasgow (3-1) and was out for around a year. Last September, the Hungarian was back between the posts in the 3-2 win in the first round of the DFB Cup at SV Wehen Wiesbaden, but then had to be content with the role of number two. “Pete is making his comeback after eleven or twelve months. This is an important moment. Anything left behind is competition. But I won’t change the goalkeeper every three days. We are in a very good position at the moment,” said Coach Rose at the time.

During Gulácsi’s downtime, substitute Janis Blaswich (32) moved into goal and was recently recommended for a nomination for the German national team. Blaswich played 25 games at club level this season and kept six clean sheets. Last weekend the game at VfB Stuttgart was lost 2:5. “We see the overall situation,” emphasized Rose. The fact that you lost three games in a row would be taken into account in the evaluation. They want to “set new impulses” in the goal.
