PSV did bad business in the title race. At home, AZ lost 1-2. Goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo played a negative role, who was preferred over Joël Drommel.
It was a week full of surprises in Eindhoven. Earlier this week, trainer Roger Schmidt announced that he would retire at the end of the season. The passing of Drommel on Saturday evening was added to this. The keeper was replaced by the already written off Yvon Mvogo.
Schmidt thought that the keeper taken over from FC Twente had not performed well after the winter break and that it was therefore time for a change of guard. Remarkable given the fact that he has defended Drommel so often.
But anyone who followed PSV last season knows that the Swiss goalie is not doing much better. Mvogo was the first man under the bar last season and he did not manage to make an indelible impression. He didn’t do that on Saturday night either. In fact, PSV lost due to a blunder by the goalkeeper.
First goal
It was Armando Obispo who had put PSV ahead after twenty minutes. A great moment for the young central defender as it was his first goal in the Eredivisie. The home side looked set to have an easy evening. But after the opening goal, she fell far back.
It led to the equalizer of Bruno Martins Indi. After poor defense, the AZ defender was completely free on the penalty spot and was able to easily score the 1-1. That was also the rest position.
blunder Mvogo
In the second half, the level of play dropped to a dubious level. Nevertheless, the match remained very attractive. There were many disturbances and both teams sought the attack. PSV seemed to have the better papers to take the win. Substitute Yorbe Vertessen was already close to 2-1 and Cody Gakpo also had a second Eindhoven goal on his foot.
So the 2-1 was up in the air when it all went wrong on the other side. Goalkeeper Mvogo completely misjudged a deep pass, causing the ball to go over him. Behind the PSV goalie, Jesper Karlsson scored in an empty goal. A doomsday scenario for Schmidt, PSV and the 12,000 supporters present.
tumultuous week
There has been so much talk about Roger Schmidt this week and it will be no different after Saturday night. The choice to pass Drommel turns out completely wrong. A horror film for the German trainer who will undoubtedly have to suffer from blisters.
Because there were no more goals, making the blunder of Mvogo PSV fatal. PSV not only loses to AZ, but probably also the connection with Ajax. The team from Amsterdam already took over the lead from PSV two weeks ago after a 1-2 win in Eindhoven and can extend the lead on Sunday with a win over Heracles. And so, after a turbulent week in Eindhoven, the storm will not subside for the foreseeable future. Let alone that the pressure on Schmidt will decrease.
