DHB keeper Andreas Wolff is going to the World Cup as a new father. In the test against Brazil, national coach Alfred Gislason gave his regular keeper a break.
A few days before the start of the Handball World Cup, Andreas Wolff, goalkeeper for the German national team, was able to celebrate a special event: he became a father for the first time. His partner gave birth to the child on Thursday. In the evening, Wolff was present in the hall for the friendly against Brazil, but was spared by national coach Alfred Gislason.
The entire team shared their joy about the offspring. Left winger Rune Dahmke was enthusiastic about it on ZDF: “I’m totally happy about it.” The Bild newspaper had previously reported on the birth.
The due date was already known in advance, which is why Gislason adjusted his plans accordingly. The national coach decided to start the preparation with three goalkeepers. In addition to Wolff, David Späth and Joel Birlehm are also part of the squad. The team is currently housed in Hamburg. From there, Wolff was able to easily drive to his home in Kiel in just over an hour to be with his family.
Now the THW Kiel goalkeeper can concentrate on the tasks ahead. The DHB selection starts the tournament against Poland on Wednesday. Other opponents in the preliminary round are Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The team’s goal is to win a World Cup medal for the first time since winning the title in 2007.
