Goalie Beau Reus left for Belgium about goalkeeper change AZ: “Surprising”

After seven years at AZ, Beau Reus leaves for SK Beveren. The tall goalie was ready for a new challenge. “I want to be the first keeper of a first team and I see perspective for that at Beveren.” De Alkmaarder has signed a two-year contract with the Belgian club.

“AZ often gets adult keepers and as a young player it is difficult to become the first goalkeeper,” 20-year-old Beau Reus tells NH Sport. “If you look at the recent past, AZ always got keepers from outside. Only now Hobie Verhulst is the first goalkeeper through a detour.”

“I don’t blame AZ”

Reus made 31 appearances for Jong AZ in the first division in the past two seasons. “I spoke with goalkeeper coach Nick van Aart about my situation and also with Hobie Verhulst. They both advised me to take this step,” said Reus from the training camp with SK Beveren in The Hague. “I don’t blame AZ either. Hobie Verhulst has a lot of experience and is currently the best keeper. And I have done everything I can and I am content with leaving AZ behind me.”

“A surprising choice that Verhulst is now keeping.”

“With his gray head”

Since Beau Reus has settled at his new club, it is clear that AZ coach Pascal Jansen prefers goalkeeper Hobie Verhulst and not Peter Vindahl for the time being. “I think that’s a surprising choice, especially when you consider that AZ paid a lot of money for Vindahl last season. On the other hand, Verhulst is doing very well, also last season if he was allowed to keep goal. And Verhulst is my buddy, so I wholeheartedly wish it on him”, Reus admits honestly before handing out a sneer to his friend with a laugh. “It just doesn’t look like he’s standing under the crossbar with his gray head.”

“Big Guests”

Reus has been employed by the club that relegated from the Belgian first division last season for more than a week. And the Alkmaarder already notices a big difference in training method. “There is much more physical training here. There are also quite large guests here. There is a player of 2.07 meters. Well I just look up to that with my 1.98 meters. Although that is nice for me with corners and free kicks against.”

Tonight Reus can play with his new club. SK Beveren will then practice against ADO Den Haag.
