Goal shortly before the end: Hansa Rostock celebrates late against Braunschweig

As of: September 30, 2023 4:37 p.m

Hansa Rostock won 1-0 (0-0) against Eintracht Braunschweig in the 2nd league thanks to a late goal from Jasper van der Werff (87th). “Löwen” coach Jens Härtel had to accept a bitter defeat on his return to Rostock.

This means that Eintracht remains at least 17th in the table. Should Osnabrück win in Kaiserslautern on Sunday, Braunschweig would even be at the bottom. Hansa Rostock, on the other hand, ended its negative series of three defeats in a row.

“We invested a lot in the first half and kept Braunschwieg well away from the goal,” said Hansa coach Alois Schwartz. In the end it was a somewhat lucky victory because of the “standard goal”.

There were few highlights in terms of play; well-thought-out and well-finished attacks were a rarity. Nevertheless, both teams had their chances. “We have to blame ourselves for not scoring a goal,” said Braunschweig coach Jens Härtel. “Then you lose a game that you shouldn’t lose.”

Braunschweig has been far too passive for a long time

The first chance almost led to Rostock taking the lead – with strong help from the Braunschweig defense. After a goal kick, Jannis Nikolaou misused the ball, Robert Ivanov shot at Juan José Perea in his hectic attempt to clear the ball and the ball landed on the post (18th).

In any case, the hosts were the much more active team. Braunschweig barely got into the opponent’s half, but had a decent opportunity after a nice individual performance from Ujah substitute Kaan Caliskaner through Fabio Kaufmann (33′).

A little later, the Hansa fans held their breath because keeper Markus Kolke got far out of his goal without any difficulty. Braunschweig’s Florian Krüger was much quicker on the ball. However, his somewhat hasty lob clearly missed the empty goal (36th).

Then Kolke’s counterpart Ron-Thorben Hoffmann showed his class. The Eintracht keeper lunged after a header from Damian Roßbach and directed the ball over the crossbar (40th).

A corner brings the decision

After the break, Braunschweig gave up its rigid defensive tactics and was suddenly the team that dominated the game. The Hansa defense came into trouble a few times, but Eintracht lacked the ultimate consistency (and goal scorer Ujah).

Half an hour before the final whistle, the impression became clear that a goal would decide this game. But how would it fall? A standard? A lucky shot? But through a well-played attack?

A corner ultimately made the home team rejoice: Van der Werff was able to climb unchallenged into the six-yard box and head the ball in to make it 1-0.
