Goal of the year 2022: From 60 meters in the angle – Podolski scores goal of the year

Status: 04.02.2023 6:12 p.m

Lukas Podolski scored the goal of the year 2022, that is the result of a vote among Sportschau viewers.

Lukas Podolski only raised his head once, and then he had made his decision. It was a day in early November 2022 and Podolski was playing in Poland’s first division with Górnik Zabrze against Pogon Stettin. When Podolski got the ball, it was 73 minutes, and you won’t soon forget that.

Podolski, 37, was standing in his own half of the field, almost 60 meters from the opposing goal. He shot with his left foot and hit the ball perfectly, with enough power, especially with precision. Szczecin’s goalkeeper looked somewhat horrified as the ball dipped into the goal above him, in the top left corner.

Podolski before Popp and Zalazar

It was a beautiful goal – and for many people it was the most beautiful goal of 2022. This is the result of a vote among Sportschau viewers.

Over 43,000 or 14.19 percent of the participants voted for the former national player. This puts Podolski in first place, just ahead of Alexandra Popp (12.9 percent of the votes). Third was Rodrigo Zalazar with 10.4 percent.

But it is not a premiere for Podolski. He had scored the goal of the year before, in 2017.

Podolski and the goal of the month – nobody scored it more often

Podolski had previously been honored for his goal from within his own half, and the participants voted it November’s goal of the month. Podolski has now won this poll thirteen times, more than any other footballer.

Second-placed Jürgen Klinsmann (seven TdM) and third-placed Klaus Fischer, Mario Basler and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (all six TdM) are no longer active, they can no longer catch up with Podolski. The active footballer closest to Podolski is Serge Gnabry with four goals this month.
