Goal of the Month September 2023: Metcalfe’s left hammer is Goal of the Month

As of: October 28, 2023 7:57 p.m

Connor Metcalfe from FC St. Pauli wins the vote for Goal of the Month for September 2023 with his 30-meter shot in the game against Holstein Kiel.

This goal is reminiscent of a goal of the month from 2015, scored by a certain Xabi Alonso in the DFB Cup round of 16 shortly before Christmas. Or – a little further back in the history of this competition – in 1972, two goals from Franz Beckenbauer in February and Manfred Kaltz in May, who became goalscorers of the month with equally powerful long-range shots.

Free rein and hit hard

Metcalfe is in good company with his goal and his hard-hitting precision bullet is in no way inferior to the goals of these great role models.

The Australian takes advantage of a blocked shot after the ball bounces off the knee of a Kiel defender and lands right at his feet. The Pauli all-rounder then has a clear path 30 meters in front of the goal. He runs up and hits the ball so optimally with his strong left foot that it flies towards the Kiel box as if pulled on a string and hits the top left corner of the goal.

The fifth TdM for St.Pauli

Almost 100,000 spectators and users of the sports show voted for Metcalfe’s left hammer, which relegates Nikla’s best beautiful free kick goal to second place. Beste can console himself with the fact that he won with a free kick in August 2023.

For St. Pauli, this is the fifth TdM in the over 50-year history of this legendary competition. Rüdiger Wenzel scored the first in March 1989, and Julian Koch scored the last one in January 2015.
