FC Bayern: New man “as happy as he’s rarely been” – “Absolutely not” had any thoughts of ending his career

Before comeback contact with Nagelsmann

Captain Manuel Neuer was overjoyed and relieved after his successful comeback in the FC Bayern goal. “I am as happy as I have rarely been after a game that I finally made it,” said the 37-year-old on “Sky” after the 8-0 win in the Bundesliga against SV Darmstadt on Saturday. “I was positively excited, not in the way that I was nervous, but in some anticipation of what was going to happen out here. I was just really happy to be back in the Allianz Arena, to play in front of my own fans again and to be on the pitch with the team.”

Neuer, who was one of the most valuable Bundesliga players without an appearance this season with a market value of 5 million euros before the match day, celebrated his return 323 days after his skiing accident with a serious fracture of his lower leg and had a great save against Darmstadt’s Marvin Mehlem with the score at 0-0, played an important role in the victory.

During the rehab, during which there were also setbacks, he “definitely” had no idea that this was it and that he no longer wanted to go through the effort. “There were a lot of ups and downs, that’s clear, but I always had the will to return, was always ambitious.”

After the DFB Cup second round game at 1. FC Saarbrücken on Wednesday, Bayern will play the league classic at Borussia Dortmund next Saturday. Neuer emphasized that Thomas Tuchel has the final say on further deployment planning: “Of course the coach has the say, and then it goes. I’m just trying to regenerate and concentrate on the next tasks.” In the world, no 37-year-old is more valuable than the 2014 world champion.

Neuer had contact with national coach Nagelsmann before his comeback

Neuer also explained that he had been in contact with the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann on Friday, but remained cautious about the topic of the national team and the home European Championship next year.

“I think that’s a topic that I’m not currently dealing with because I played my first game today. I’m happy that it went so well and that I’m back,” said Neuer, who reported on the conversation with former coach Nagelsmann: “He wished me all the best for today.” Neuer didn’t reveal anything else. With him “everything is deeply relaxed. I’m looking forward to the next games and will give it my all as always.”

Have your say in the forum about the DFB!

He sees the goalkeeping situation in the national team as “positive,” said the 117-time international. Since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he has been number 1 in the DFB goal at all World Cup and European Championship tournaments. “We have great goalkeepers – and we are all looking forward to the European Championships.” Regarding the number 1 question and the competitor Marc-André ter Stegen, he answered briefly and succinctly: “I think that he is definitely number one at the moment .”
