Global temperature deviation will rise above +2°C for the first time in 2024: are our climate goals still achievable?

2023 was the hottest year ever recorded worldwide and 2024 will continue this trend. For example, January 2024 was the warmest January ever observed worldwide and the temperature anomaly remains abnormally high in February. During the period between February 8 and 11, global temperatures actually rose more than +2°C above pre-industrial values. According to climate scientists, this is a sign that climate change is accelerating. But what exactly is going on? How exceptional is this? And what about the Paris agreement? Are the objectives still achievable? Climate scientist Samuel Helsen explains.
