Global Fashion Agenda and BBC develop documentary series

Global Fashion Agenda (GFA) is working on a film series about social and environmental sustainability in the fashion industry. The documentary series will be produced by BBC Storyworks, a subsidiary of British broadcaster BBC, and will be published on BBC.com next year, the non-profit sustainability initiative said at the Global Fashion Summit on Thursday.

Fashion faces a huge challenge in the coming decades, but it also offers the industry an opportunity to prove itself by promoting sustainability and responsibility. The documentary series is designed to explore advancements in the fashion industry and feature case studies that highlight positive examples of leadership, innovation and collaboration. Among other things, topics such as the conditions for workers, the procurement of materials and the circular economy are to be addressed. The aim is to stimulate important conversations and educate consumers about various problems and their potential solutions, while encouraging those responsible in the industry to take a step in the right direction.

Inspire and enlighten

“We are delighted to be collaborating with BBC StoryWorks to disseminate educational content on sustainability in fashion,” said Federica Marchionni, Managing Director of the Global Fashion Agenda. “In order to change the industry and draw a positive balance, we need to inspire and educate people about how we can produce, distribute and consume fashion in a sustainable way. For a world that continues beyond next season, we invite everyone to learn and be part of a necessary and possible change.”

A dedicated page will be set up on the BBC website for the documentary series. There viewers will not only find the films, but also further information and reports on the topics covered. “We are delighted to be partnering with GFA to develop a series that explores how fashion can give back to society and the environment more than it takes,” said Simon Shelley, Vice President of Program Partnerships for BBC Studios .

Companies can present positive initiatives

Global Fashion Agenda members and partners, which include well-known companies such as Nike, Kering and Bestseller, can currently contribute their own experiences and stories to the documentary series. For this purpose, a concrete project or an initiative of a company dealing with the social impact of the fashion industry, various raw materials, environmental protection or the circular economy must be presented. Submissions will be reviewed and selected where appropriate by the GFA and BBC Storyworks.
