Glasses frame: which one to choose depending on your visual defect

THEn metal because they are lighter. Without the part underneath because they are more glamorous. Cat, butterfly or John Lennon style? When choosing eyeglass frames There are many factors to take into consideration. Unfortunately, however, we often think only of aesthetic ones without remembering that the shape and position of the frame are essential to correct the various visual defects well. Choosing the most beautiful, but perhaps less suitable one, can make the correction less effective or provide uncomfortable viewing. That’s why it is good to rely on the technical advice of the optician who, based on the ophthalmologist’s prescription, can guide you in your choice. To help him now there is also an avatar.

If you are nearsighted, a small frame is better…

Myopia is one of the most common vision defects. “The higher it is, the thicker the lenses are on the outside,” he explains Stephen AmarenaOptician Optometrist Trainer for Zeiss. «Those who are very nearsighted should choose a small size frame, because this helps contain lateral deformations, what is called peripheral cerclage and which cannot be completely eliminated, but can be reduced with the right setting. Better to opt for too wide side arms, which help cover the thickness of the lenses on the sides. Not only that, the thicker the frame, the easier it is to hide the lenses inside its edge, which are not always very thin for this type of visual problem» explains the expert. “Basically, the metal temples are not the most suitable for myopsi, because they could reveal a residual thickness in the temple areas of the lens».

…and plastic

Even glasses with frames “per day or glasant”that is where there is only the bridge that joins the two lenses that remain completely uncovered, they are not recommended for the strong short-sighted. Also avoid squared models or those that almost look like “rectangles”. The most suitable shapes for this visual defect are, however, the oval or rounded ones, certainly in plastic. Better, however, if the frame is not too thin because it could be subjected to excessive tension. . The suggestion is to ask the optician for advice on whether the one “you like best” is suitable for the type of lens to be “mounted on”.

Even for farsightedness, no big frames

From an optical point of view, the lenses of those suffering from farsightedness are somewhat the opposite of those of the myopic. “The lens is thicker in the central part and thinner towards the edges,” explains Dr. Amarena. “Again, one small frame is more advantageouseven from an aesthetic point of view. There is no problem with the thickness that can be seen at the edges, as in myopia. So it doesn’t matter what the barlines look like» clarifies the expert. Also in this case the most suitable material is plastic, but you can choose a light frame that is also easier to wear. In both visual defects, i.e. myopia and hyperopia, especially if the diopters to be corrected are many, it is always better choose thinner lenses possible, to facilitate the work of the optician, but also to have a lower weight on the nose.

Stefano Amarena is an optometrist and trainer.

If you have astigmatism, the “Nylor” are to be avoided

The “Nylor” are those frames that have only a transparent “thread” in the lower part. Consequently, the lenses seem to have no base of support. «Those suffering from astigmatism need lenses whose thickness is not constant, but varies slightly over the entire surface» explains the expert. If the astigmatism is very high, i.e. greater than 4 diopters, it could happen that the thickest part is the one at the bottom. «In these cases, Nylor frames are not suitable for people with astigmatism» explains the optician.

For presbyopia you can abound

Those who suffer from presbyopia, on the other hand, can easily choose large frames, indeed they should. The lenses to correct this defectindeed, they are progressive. It means that in the upper part they are made to see well from afar, while the lower one is used to look closely. «For this defect of vision they are needed wider framesin this way the entire surface of the lens is used well and the wearer of glasses sees well even underneath, with greater overall comfort» explains the optician.

Computer vision syndrome: what it is and how to solve it

Pay attention to the centering of the glasses

It is the distance between the pupil centers and it is one of the parameters that the optician must measure once the frame has been chosen. If the centering is wrong, or distorted by the use of glasses, the correction is not as good as it should be. In practice, even if the lenses are of the correct prescription, you still cannot see well. For this the centering must be carried out in a “scientific” way. It must take into account the chosen frame and the parameters of the wearer. For some time, to have perfect centering digital measurement is used which leaves no margin for error. Be careful, however, that after some time the temples of the glasses may loosen and the frame slides over the nose. In this case the “centering” will no longer be the right one and, surely, it won’t look good like when the glasses were new. Just go to the optician who will restore it in a few minutes and… you will be able to see the stars again.

An avatar to understand which is the best frame

Anyone with a strong visual defect has a more problem to choose the frame best: when he tries on a new one he can’t see exactly how it fits once he wears it, because the glasses he tries on don’t have prescription lenses. Also for this an avatar has been created that allows you to try as many frames as you like, without actually having to place them on your nose. The avatar offers the possibility of change colors of your chosen frame and see how they match the face of the person wearing them trying virtuallyAnd. The machine, present in some Zeiss stores, with a single “photographic” shot collects all the parameters needed to find the best frame from an aesthetic point of view, but also from an ophthalmological point of view. After that it creates a real avatar of the person who should wear the glasses, who sees himself with all the models that the avatar has selected. Of these frames you can also change the color of the lenses, maybe try to see how those glasses become with anti-reflection or photochromic lenses. Not only that but they can “snap” multiple photos with different frames, for choose carefully, once at home, the best one. From all points of view.
