Hence a strong appeal for international guests present in Syracuse.

Agamemnon of Aeschylus, directed by Davide Livermore (July 5) opens the trilogy “Oresteia“.

In the palace of Argos, a system of fires warns that Troy has been taken. The return of Agamemnon is anxiously awaited, preceded by a herald who narrates the labors of the war and the arduous return. For some time now, Clytemnestra has been preparing the murder of her husband, who had sacrificed her firstborn Iphigenia. Agamemnon enters the scene taking the concubine with him Cassandra, who prophesies imminent regicide without being believed. Iphigeniathe sacrificial victim saved by the goddess Artemis

In Iphigenia in Tauride of Euripides, directed by Jacopo Gassmann (27, 28, 30 June and 2 and 4 July) the register changes. And there is also the happy ending. Agamemnon’s first daughter, Iphigenia, whom everyone believes dead, lives in remote Tauride. The goddess Artemis had saved her, replacing her with a doe and taking her away from Aulis at the moment in which her father was sacrificing her.

Iphigenia tells her story in the prologue, describing her own painful condition of priestess of Artemis, a foreigner in a foreign country, forced to make human sacrifices. His brother Orestes, fleeing from the Erinyes, arrives in Tauris with Pyladas and escapes the sacrifice because he recognizes his sister. The three deceive the local king, Toante, and flee to sea.

Brothers fleeing the barbarians

Iphigenia in Tauride»Writes in the director’s notes Jacopo Gassmann« is a text studded with questions and contradictions, starting from its stylistically hybrid nature. It is a dark and restless tragedy that suddenly turns into an “escape tragedy”, a sort of daring escape from a land where human sacrifices are apparently made but which, on closer inspection, will reveal a much more ambiguous and elusive nature ».
