56 million loss in 3 years
Borussia Mönchengladbach’s CFO Stephan Schippers is optimistic about the future after years of losses. “It’s going uphill again from now on. In this financial year we will achieve the turnaround and be in the black again,” said the 55-year-old to “kicker”.
Due to the minus of 56 million euros in the three years of the corona pandemic, the Bundesliga club’s equity fell from 103.3 to 47.1 million euros. “Some of the fat that we had eaten has melted off. Nevertheless, we can be satisfied with how we got through these difficult times as a club,” said Schippers.

Transfer proceeds should again contribute to more income and free transfers of professionals with considerable value such as Marcus Thuram (Inter Milan), Ramy Bensebaini (Borussia Dortmund) and Matthias Ginter (SC Freiburg) should be avoided in the future. “We have to dare again, we deserve to give up good players. Buy, sell – there has to be a balance,” Schippers demanded.
The “foals” achieved transfer income of EUR 25 million this summer from Jordan Beyer (Burnley) and Jonas Hofmann (Bayer Leverkusen). However, Gladbach did not decide to sell: in Beyer’s case, a purchase option was activated, in Hofmann’s, an exit clause. Sports director Roland Virkus would have liked to keep the national player, his designated successor Franck Honorat (Stade Brest) will probably cost a similar amount with bonuses. In addition, defender Nico Elvedi and midfielder Florian Neuhaus are considered candidates for sale should they not extend their contracts beyond 2024.
