After a sobering season, Borussia Mönchengladbach is looking forward to a fresh start in the summer. It appears that the Foals continue to have an Arsenal striker in their sights for the future squad.
As the English “Daily Mail” writes, Borussia is still involved in the poker around striker Eddie Nketiah. The 22-year-old only has a contract with the Gunners until the end of June. In the summer he could therefore join the Gladbachers on a free transfer.
Arsenal are said to have not yet given up hope that Nketiah will extend his contract on the Thames. In addition to the Bundesliga club, the newspaper also says it is interested in the Premier League club Crystal Palace.
A major upheaval is looming on the Lower Rhine this summer. Centre-back Matthias Ginter has already decided he will leave the club. In the case of Marcus Thuram, Alassane Pléa and Breel Embolo, a departure is at least not out of the question, especially since Borussia is likely to miss international business this season.
Nketiah shoots herself on the Gladbach radar
The five-time German champion has already announced that only cheap players can be realized in the summer due to the financial losses of the pandemic and without international prize money. “We will sell players in the summer and will not be able to replace them adequately,” warned squad planner Steffen Korell recently.
Nketiah has been traded several times in the past as a possible successor to Pléa as a striker because of the small price tag. However, the “Bild” wrote in March that the Gladbach leadership still had doubts about its quality.
Most recently, however, Nketiah delivered solid arguments in the Arsenal FC dress. His best performance of the season came in a midweek brace in the 4-2 win against Chelsea. Even Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta then had to concede that the youngster might have deserved more chances in recent months.
Nketiah is currently in 15 league appearances for the Londoners this season.
