Giusy Buscemi a One step from heaven

If there are three of us in our Zoom interview – the two of us and the eldest daughter Caterina, 5 years old – she doesn’t make a pleat. Her children are her, she claims, “one more card, not one less.” In the new season of One step from heaven his Manuela Nappi, already seen in the third and sixth, has become the protagonist, and has made a career.

We had left her as a police officer who went to Belluno to study, now she has returned to San Vito di Cadore as an inspector and with her own investigative techniques. One step away from heaven, after Terence Hill and Daniele Liotti, now there is a woman.

How is the new Manuela Nappi?
It has changed a lot. In San Vito, in the same police station where her brother is deputy commissioner, Manuela has a different approach to work.

Do you have something in common with your character?
Little. Unlike me, Manuela is sporty, she rides the bike. She knows how to move in the mountains, it’s her natural dimension. I grew up in Menfi, in the province of Agrigento, and I’ve always spent my holidays by the sea. I started to discover and love the mountains thanks to this series. In common perhaps I have a certain ability to notice when someone is telling a lie. But mine is intuition, hers is a scientific approach.

He left Menfi in 2012 for Salsomaggiore. She at 19, she Miss Italy. How much has her life changed?
I had just graduated from the scientific high school, I was in the phase of great choices. I took university tests and participated in the selections. Meanwhile, I was taking a diction course because I wanted to learn to speak without the Sicilian accent. And then you know the irony of fate?

No, tell me.
That after Miss Italia, the fashion catwalks and bit parts here and there, I had my first leading role in Ladies’ Paradisewhere I played a Sicilian who spoke in dialect.

But it didn’t stop there.
No. I participated in the miniseries Once upon a time Studio Oneto the movie I stop when I want – Masterclass but then, when I told myself that I had a clear road ahead, I got engaged and changed my priorities.

With Jan Michelini, director. You met while filming One step from heaven 3?
No, before, and we didn’t even like each other at first. Then our story began on the set, which was serious from the start. I got married at 24.

Giusy Buscemi is back on TV: «Motherhood has given me a lot also professionally»

This issue of iO Donna is dedicated to brides. Tell us about her wedding.
At S. Maria in Trastevere, in Rome, with a white dress that I strongly wanted in the Grace Kelly style. We decided in December 2016, we got married in May 2017. When we went to Sicily to announce that we would get married in the spring, my mother asked: what year? We use long times. A friend of mine, who has been engaged for 10 years, will get married in 3. Today I would like to recall two phrases about marriage that are dear to me, said by a priest friend of ours. The first: if the charisma of engagement is truth, that of marriage is forgiveness. The second: she remembers that she is first a wife and then a mother. Getting married is a dress you wear inside, every day. Children experience the love they see between their parents.

After the first two children, she decided to take a break for a while. Why?
Caterina, 5 years old and Pietro, 3, were born 18 months apart. During the two pregnancies I had been called for important projects. But they didn’t include a baby bump, so I let it go. Beautiful and big choices bring with them small sacrifices. I said to myself: it’s time to build a family, it was a call that Jan and I felt together.

After Caterina and Pietro she returned to work to play the psychotherapist Lucia in Doc 2. Then came Elia, who is 8 months old.
I finished Doc 2 I was recently pregnant again. A month after Elia’s birth, at the end of August, I left for Cadore with my family to shoot Un passo dal cielo 7. We took a house, the two older ones went to kindergarten. Every day on set I pumped myself and someone took it to the nanny because I wanted to breastfeed. I looked great physically and it was fun. The great private joy was the basis of professional serenity. I felt like I had one more card to play, not one less.

She got married in church. What relationship do you have with faith?
My family had sown the seed. Then there was a period of distance, necessary because without freedom there is no authentic knowledge. The rapprochement happened thanks to people I met. From there, a journey of discovery began. Faith for me means following a losing model according to the world: the model of someone who died for love.

What does it mean to love?
The key to love is in forgiveness. I felt forgiven when I felt loved. In daily life it is not always easy. But when you fall, you get back up.
