Gistel proposes new recreational zone for young people
It took a long time to find a good place for this new project. The city council and the opposition came up with various proposals. In the end, the Zomerloossite was chosen. Right next to the leisure center.
“We are going to set up a skate park, an omni-sports cage, a Finnish running track and then some monkey bars for the youth. And for KEG Gistel we are going to set up an art field for the U13”, says Gauthier Defreyne, mayor of Gistel.
And that as compensation for the loss of ground.

Emergency for youth zone
Twenty percent of the population of Gistel is younger than 18. After years, the youth of Gistel finally has something to look forward to. This mainly concerns young people who have outgrown the playgrounds and do not opt for a youth movement or other association.
“It is even from when I was still twelve years old that young people asked for a zone where they can stay. We often heard: ‘We are on a playground, but the residents want us to leave. Where can we go in Gistel? ?’ Now they will be located next to the KEG Gistel in the recreation zone,” says Mayor Defreyne.
Smart cameras
A youth worker will soon have to keep an eye on the ins and outs on the site. And there will also be smart cameras. Farys has yet to give his blessing on the master plan. The tender for this 1.1 million euro project will follow before the summer holidays.
