FC Girona return after three years in Spain’s first division.
The Catalans prevailed against CD Tenerife in the playoff final of the Segunda Division, after the 0-0 in the first leg Girona won the second leg on the Canary Island on Sunday 2-1 (1-0).
Top scorer Christhian Stuani (42′) with a hand penalty, an own goal by Tenerife’s José Leon (68′) and a goal by Arnau Martinez (80′) brought the victory, Carlos Ruiz (59′) had equalized in the meantime.
Girona was promoted to La Liga for the first time in 2017, but slipped back into second division in 2019. Tenerife has been waiting for games in the first division since 2010.
In the promotion relegation, however, the two clubs made for an outsider final: Girona and Tenerife, sixth and fifth in the championship, eliminated SD Eibar (3rd) and UD Las Palmas (4th) in the playoff semifinals.
Real Valladolid and UD Almeria have already climbed directly into La Liga.
