Giro finals back in Rome for the first time since 2018

The winner of the Giro d’Italia 2023 will be crowned in the capital Rome for the first time in five years.

The return of the second most important cycling race in the world after the Tour de France to the “Eternal City” after the debacle of 2018 due to the short-term shortening of the final stage was announced by the organizers when the route map was presented.

The arrival at the Tiber is scheduled for May 28 after a total of 21 stages and 3448.6 km.

After starting 22 days earlier for the opening individual time trial in the Abruzzo region, the peloton only leaves Italy for the finish of stage 13 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, after crossing the Große-St. Bernhard Pass as the highest point of the tour.

The Giro makers had avoided Rome since the embarrassment in the capital. In 2018, the final stage through the metropolis was neutralized after just three laps instead of the originally planned ten, because the risk of injury for the drivers was considered too great due to the unexpectedly poor road conditions.

After repairing most of the damage, the route passes famous sights such as the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus or the Spanish Steps.
