Cuneo (dpa) – Phil Bauhaus just missed his first stage win at the 105th Giro d’Italia. The 27-year-old bike sprinter from Bocholt had to admit defeat to the French series winner Arnaud Démare in second place on the 13th stage over 150 kilometers from Sanremo to Cuneo.
Third was ex-world champion Mark Cavendish from Great Britain. For Démare it was already the third stage win in this year’s Giro and the eighth success overall.
“I was fast. The finish line came five meters too early for me. Second place is a shitty result for a sprinter,” said Bauhaus on the TV channel Eurosport. For the professional cyclist it was already the fifth top ten placement at the Tour of Italy 2022.
In the overall standings, Emanuel Buchmann moved up one place to eighth after Frenchman Romain Bardet had to retire on Friday. The previous fourth overall fell ill on Thursday and his condition had deteriorated overnight. Buchmann is 1:09 behind Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez, who has worn the pink jersey since stage four when he finished second behind Lennard Kämna on Mount Etna.
On Saturday, on the 14th stage, the riders in the classification are more challenged again. On the 147-kilometer section from Santena to Turin, four mountains of the second category and one of the third category have to be conquered. The Tour of Italy ends on May 29 in Verona.
