Giro d’Italia 2023: Lennard Kämna announces “action” in the final sprint

Two thirds of the Giro d’Italia 2023 are done: The German professional cyclist Lennard Kämna goes into the final week of his first major national tour as captain with good legs in seventh place. He has no secret dreams of the podium.

Lennard Kämna expects attacks among the top favorites in the final week of the 106th Giro d’Italia. Due to the weather and a few absences from important helpers, there was hardly any movement in the overall rankings in the second week of the tour.

“I understand that it looked a bit boring, but there will be some action,” said Bremen on the second day of rest. “I’m expecting a tough race, lots of tough mountains. I’ll see how it goes. I’ve felt good on the longer climbs lately.”

Giro d’Italia 2023: Lennard Kämna doesn’t want to chase dreams

Kämna is seventh overall in the final stages that begin on Tuesday with the mountain finish on Monte Bondone.

If Kämna keeps his place in the overall standings, he would be satisfied in the end. “For me, it’s the first Grand Tour that I’m driving in a classification,” said the 26-year-old. He will not start “chasing dreams that I don’t even have myself”. The first two weeks were a waiting game, physically he feels good.

Kämna is currently 3:02 minutes behind leader Bruno Armirail. But the Frenchman is not considered to be a mountaineer and will probably lose his pink jersey on Tuesday. Kämna identified the three drivers behind Armirail as favorites for overall victory: Briton Geraint Thomas, Slovenian Primoz Roglic and Portuguese Joao Almeida.
