Six rappers raise their voices and call for more self-empowerment with the song “If I want”. It’s about all those moments in which a woman is told how to behave in our patriarchal world. Together, the rappers Nessi, Alicia Awa, Celo Minati, Charisma as well as Bounty and Cocoa set an example with their single and declare war on imposed social norms with provocative self-confidence.

The music industry needs a redesign
The Female Collabo is the first German rap project to be exclusively female. It is not surprising that the project initiated was brought to life by the German rap label Walk This Way Records/ Chapter ONE. With more than 50 percent of positions occupied by women, this is one of the role model labels when it comes to attributions such as equality and diversity. An American study according to the music industry, whether on or behind the scenes, is still a long way from gender equality.
Rap as a mouthpiece for equality
The extent to which gender structures representation in the music industry can be best illustrated using the prime examples of rap and hip-hop. Looking inside the scene, it is still noticeable that the exclusion of women is confirmed again and again. Many advocates of gender equality are therefore increasingly pushing for a redesign of the music industry in which there is no longer any room for unequal power relations. Rigid structures have weighed many women down, which is why there is a need for several female role models who encourage women and young girls to be more self-confident.
