Since the return to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban have increasingly restricted the rights of girls and women. They are no longer welcome from secondary education. University education is also prohibited for them. The EU envoy points out that education is nevertheless a necessary investment in Afghanistan’s future.
At the end of last year, the new rulers also banned Afghan women from working in aid organizations, with the exception of the health, education and nutrition sectors. “This is a clear violation of women’s right to work and seriously affects their ability to provide for themselves and their families,” Niklasson said.
