One of the three women killed in a shooting at a cafe in Rome on Sunday appears to be a close friend of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Meloni posted a photo on Instagram on Sunday evening of herself next to Nicoletta Golisano, one of the victims. “Nicoletta was a protective mother, a sincere and discreet friend, a strong and vulnerable woman at the same time.”
“She will always be so beautiful and happy to me,” Meloni wrote. “It is not right to die like this. She is survived by her husband Giovanni and a beautiful 10-year-old son, Lorenzo.”
Shootout
A man suddenly pulled out a gun on Sunday and opened fire during a gathering of residents of an apartment building in the Italian capital. Four other people were injured in the shooting, at least one of them seriously, Italian public channel Rai reported.
According to the Ansa news agency, the man entered the cafe, slammed the door and shouted “I’m going to kill you all.”
Shooter overpowered
Police arrested a 57-year-old man, Claudio Campiti, who was overpowered by other residents after the shooting. The man was involved in a series of disputes with the residents’ association, a witness told Rai.
His gun was allegedly jammed during the shooting. “He shot at the board of directors of the association that held an end-of-year meeting there,” said a witness.
