A 14-year-old girl from Copenhagen died on Thursday afternoon due to an accident with a roller coaster at Tivoli Friheden amusement park in Aarhus, Denmark, police said. Two people, including a 13-year-old boy, were injured and taken to hospital. The park has been cleared.
The rear cart on the Cobra roller coaster had broken off for unknown reasons, after which it dangled from the track hanging from the rest of the train. According to the director of the amusement park, the seats came to a stop at a height of a few meters, after which the firefighters freed people from their predicament. Experts look at what went wrong.
The local police share that it is still unclear exactly how the girl died. She starts an investigation and hopes to find out the cause of death through witness statements. The 13-year-old boy is said to have mainly suffered injuries to his hand, according to the Danish newspaper Copenhagen Post†
Tivoli Friheden is closed until further notice, according to the boss of the amusement park, Henrik Ragborg Olesen. “We have cleared the park and are providing psychological assistance to people close to the accident. This applies to staff as well as guests and family members.” Police are calling on you not to share videos or photos of the incident on social media.
It is not the first time that there have been problems with the roller coaster. In 2008, the Cobra’s front cart crashed due to an overloaded axle. Four youths were injured in the legs and feet. One of them suffered a concussion from the accident.
The Cobra is a so-called inverted coaster† That means you don’t ride in the cart on the track, but your seat hangs under the track and the train is attached to the top. The Cobra reaches a height of 25 meters and is 400 meters long. The roller coaster can reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour.
